Duduza resident arrested for keeping an animal farm on residential premises

Armed with a court document that allows officials to search and seize, several animals that were kept in a so-called zoo, were impounded.

DUDUZA – Armed with a court document that allows officials to search and seize, members of the EMPD, the health department and Nigel SPCA descended on a property in Dlamini Street (Masechaba section) on January 29, where several animals that were kept in a so-called zoo, were impounded.

According to EMPD acting spokesperson Kabeli Mokheseng, 20 pigs, three tortoises, three geese, two dogs and 27 chickens were impounded according to the City of Ekurhuleni’s by-laws.

“In accordance with the NSPCA’s Animal Act and for various health reasons, residents are not permitted to operate a zoo from their residential properties,” Mokheseng said.

The owner of the livestock, a 47-year-old man, reportedly ignored several verbal and written warnings from officials over the past four years. He was subsequently arrested for defeating the ends of justice and the livestock were confiscated by members from Nigel SPCA.

The suspect was charged at SAPS Duduza on January 29 and expected to appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court the next day.
