According to Sekwati Makhafola (acting divisional head: CoE licensing), the nationwide resumption of licensing services is subject to the hygiene, disinfection control, social distancing and sanitising measures.
“All necessary measures first have to be put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19. The Gauteng Provincial Government must first inspect and approve compliance of licensing facilities on Covid-19 regulations,” Makhafola said.
The validity period of licenses is however, extended. Motor trade number licenses that expired between 26 March and 31 May, are still valid and extended for a further grace period of six months from May 20 (as per Government Gazette No 43339 of 20 May 2020).
All learner, driver and temporary driver’s licenses, motor vehicle discs, temporary permits, roadworthy certificates and professional driving permits that expired between 26 March and 31 May are still valid and will be extended for a further 90 days from June 1.
The City of Ekurhuleni and Lesedi Local Municipality will inform the public when licensing services reopen.
It is expected that a public update will be given on June 5.
