Illegal electricity connections removed

Areas visited included parts of the Mkhankwa Village informal settlement, Crocodile Street and Second Road in Sallies Village, and Ergo Road.

A law-enforcement operation aimed at tackling illegal electricity connections took place in Brakpan last Thursday and saw the confiscation of kilometres of illegally connected cables.

The operation was conducted by members of the EMPD Anti-Cable Theft Unit Squad, SAPS and City of Ekurhuleni Energy Department officials and took place between 8am and 4pm.

Areas visited included parts of the Mkhankwa Village informal settlement, Crocodile Street and Second Road in Sallies Village, and Ergo Road.

“Members retrieved 73 500m of unlawfully connected aluminum and copper cables/wires from trenches, lamp posts and mini-substations supplying the nearby informal settlement,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

“This is an ongoing operation and arrests are imminent.”
