Harvest Outreach Centre transforms communities
To transform communities, one neighbour, at a time is the core belief of Harvest Outreach Centre (HOC) based at 621 Sikonde Street, Ratanda.
HOC is a strong community advocate for the development of previously disadvantaged individuals in various aspects, predominantly youth, women and children.
HOC is focused on assisting people who desire to move from dependency to self-sufficiency and who are focused on moving from welfare to empowerment through skills development.
This will help people to lead more comfortable, secure, sustainable, and independent lives.
“Our main vision is to have a community that is transformed, economically thriving, interdependent and psychosocially empowered. A community, therefore, that is free of social ills,” said Lerato Nyate of the HOC support team.
He added that they also aim to alleviate poverty, reduce unemployment and economic inequalities through relevant skills development programmes.
HOC runs several programmes, including:
• Substance Awareness and Prevention Programme (SAP)
SAP creates substance awareness by mobilising. They offer counselling sessions to the substance abuse users and then refer them to the Department of Social Development for rehab, offer psychosocial support, aftercare and social reintegration support.
HOC also works hand in hand with the sustainable and livelihood programme (SLP). For more information, you can contact Zandile Mokoena at zandile@harvestoutreach.org.za
• SLP
The SLP helps community members to job hunt with professional CV’s, while armed with life skills.
This program targets the youth to empower them with life skills for three days weekly and they help owners who have not registered their businesses.
For more information, contact the administrator on 079 916 5086 or the manager of the program, Sipho Fokazi, on 0764784563.
• KeMoja Programme (KM)
KeMoja is a substance awareness programme and its focus is on empowering the youth and children.
KM encourages people to refrain from taking addictive substances, while they also teach children about the dangers of substance abuse through puppet shows. KM helps to take the youth off the streets through alternative programmes, such as talent shows, poetry, dancing and music sessions.
KM also offers help for parents with children that are involved in substance abuse.
