Laer Volkskool Athletics Day unites Heidelberg pre-schools in fun-filled sporting event
More than 12 pre-schools gathered at Laer Volkskool on May 9 for an energetic athletics day focused on fun, participation and early childhood development, with educators praising the event for building confidence and encouraging a love for sport.
Laer Volkskool held its annual athletics day on May 9 at the school premises, welcoming more than 12 pre-schools from across Heidelberg in an event aimed at promoting early childhood physical activity, social interaction, and sports development.
Grade R teacher Anneen van Niekerk said the initiative is designed to encourage young learners to remain active while also giving them an opportunity to engage with children from other schools in a fun, structured environment.

“We want to encourage children to keep active in sports and to enjoy physical activity from a young age. We host this event every year and invite local pre-schools to take part so that the learners can interact with one another, build friendships, and experience the joy of being active together.
“It is about creating positive memories around sport and movement that can stay with them as they grow,” she said.

Magda Potgieter, principal of Kiddies Corner, said the athletics day plays an important role in shaping confidence and social development among young children.

“These events are extremely valuable for our little ones because they are not only about competition, but also about participation and development. The children get to meet peers from other schools, learn how to follow instructions in a group setting, and build their confidence in a very natural and enjoyable way.
“As educators, we see how much they grow just from a day like this, and it really lays a foundation for teamwork and a healthy lifestyle,” she said.

Retha van Lingen, principal of Suikerbos Academy, highlighted the importance of exposure and early encouragement in sport.
“It is always such a joy to see how enthusiastic the children are when they arrive and participate. Many of them are experiencing this type of structured sports day for the first time, and it makes a lasting impression.

“Events like these help them develop discipline, cooperation, and a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity. It is also encouraging for us as educators to see how community-driven initiatives like this contribute to the overall development of our learners,” she said.
All participating children received medals and goodie bags.
