Suspected hijacker fatally shot, another arrested
The incident followed a hijacking in Tsakani.
Three people were reportedly hijacked on March 2 in Tsakani by armed men.
In the hijackers’ attempt to get away, their vehicle was spotted on the R550 near Heidelberg, resulting in SAPS Highway Patrol and private security companies giving chase.
It appears that when the suspects noticed the law enforcement officials, they stopped the vehicle and attempted to run away.
During the encounter, one suspect was fatally wounded and another was arrested. Other suspects managed to escape.
Two firearms were found on the scene. The arrested suspect will face various charges including hijacking, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Heidelberg SAPS station commander Colonel Phiwe Ndwandwe praised the quick action of the various role players.
“We will take action against any person that commits criminal acts in our area and will do our utmost to make Heidelberg a safe zone,” said Ndwandwe.
