Wall jumpers target vulnerable properties

A spike in burglars jumping over walls has Fidelity ADT concerned.

Fidelity ADT urges residents to remain vigilant regarding their home security following a spike in opportunistic crimes.

“We have received reports of wall jumpers in the early hours of the morning between 01:00 and 03:00, jumping over walls and trying to enter homes. At this point, they are attempted break-ins only because the criminals don’t have a chance to get into the property as the alarm system triggers when they break the doors,” explains Charnel Hattingh, the group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT.

“The best defence against burglars, opportunistic thieves or armed robbers is to make your property as unattractive to criminals as possible by implementing extra precautions to keep your belongings safe, inside and outside the home,” says Hattingh.

Hattingh says, “The perimeter of your property is probably one of the most crucial security barriers to worry about. You must ensure your perimeter is secure because it is an intruder’s first point of access.

“Instal physical barriers like barbed wire fencing. Always keep your security gates locked and ensure you remove the keys. Activate early-warning systems like garden beams and electric fencing and ensure these are linked to armed response. Secure your gate motor in a steel casing or bracket, which is always locked. Ensure your alarm works correctly in all the home’s zones,” adds Hattingh.

Get the family involved in security and ensure they know where the panic buttons are. Speak to your security provider about always having remote panic buttons with you.

“Tightening small vulnerabilities can amount to a huge relief regarding home and personal security. Remain vigilant and do not leave anything to chance,” Hattingh concludes.
