According to reports, Mapfuni and friends attended a party in Ratanda. On their way home, Mapfumi said he wanted to return to the party.

The next day, when he did not return home, his friends reported him missing at the Ratanda police station.
Mapfumi was originally from Siyabuswa Village in Mpumalanga.

The friends found it strange that Mapfumi wanted to return to the party as he did not know anyone there.
