The first quarter crime statistics were released on August 28, reflecting crimes reported to SAPS from April to June this year.
The full stats for Heidelberg and Nigel are as follows and are compared to the same time period as the previous year:
Heidelberg
Contact crimes (crimes against a person)
• Murder increased from two cases the previous year to three.
• Sexual offences decreased from five to four.
• Attempted murder increased from five to 11.
• Assault GBH decreased from 10 to nine.
• Common assault decreased from 31 to 29.
• Common robbery decreased from seven to five.
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased from 66 to 55.
Total contact crimes decreased from 126 to 116.
Sexual offences
• Rape decreased from three cases the previous year to two.
• Sexual assault increased from one to two.
• Attempted sexual offences decreased from one to none.
• Contact sexual offences remained the same with no cases reported.
Some subcategories of aggravated robbery
• Carjacking decreased from 34 cases the previous year to 19.
• Robbery at residential premises increased from three to six.
• Robbery at non-residential premises increased from four to nine.
• Trio crime decreased from 41 to 34.
• Robbery of cash-in-transit vehicle remained the same with no cases were reported.
• Bank robbery remained the same with no cases were reported.
• Truck hijacking decreased from 15 to five.

• Malicious damage to property decreased from 11 to 10.

• Stock theft decreased from four to one.
Total property-related crimes increased from 63 to 76.

• All theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased from 56 cases the previous year to 35.
• Commercial crime decreased from 43 to 40.
• Shoplifting increased from 13 to 17.
Total other serious crimes decreased from 112 to 92.
Total 17 community reported serious crimes decreased from 313 to 294.
Crime detected as a result of police action
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased from four cases the previous year to three.
• Drug-related crime increased from 49 to 52.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increased from 91 to 99.
• Sexual offences detected as a result of police decreased from 24 to 18.
Total crime detected as a result of police action increased from 168 to 172.
• Kidnapping decreased from 58 cases the previous year to 28.
The local police station also featured on the national and provincial top 30 lists in the following categories:
