Dance studio hosts the Nutcracker

Old and younger students at the dance studio had a part to play in the show.

Flow Dance Studio presented a shortened version of The Nutcracker on October 29.

The ballet was held at Hoër Volkskool in two acts to the music of Tchaikovsky.

“It was so much fun putting together a show like this, with a full cast and storyline to unfold for our audience,” said Rain Hyde, one of the teachers at the studio.

“We have been planning this production since the start of the year. Students have been working hard on both group pieces and solos since July.

“Having mostly done showcases for the last few years, it was a good opportunity for our students to learn more about detailed stage work, like how to stand on stage and stay engaged in the storyline while others are performing and how to work with quick sets and costume changes.

Liané du Plessis as Clara and Eduan Kruger as the Nutcracker during the show.

“To be on stage for such a long time can be very challenging, but all the students were eager for it and performed gracefully!”

Hyde explained that the Nutcracker show is perfect for younger students.

“Our youngest students, aged seven and eight, stole the show with their Chinese tea dance. The entire audience was captivated as they curtsied at the end of their dance!” she said.

The older students at the studio had the chance to take part in group pieces and solos.

Liané du Plessis portrayed Clara in the show.

“The famous Waltz of the Flowers and Waltz of the Snowflakes are both intricate group dances that require a lot from the students both technically and mentally,” Hyde explained.

“It has swift changes and complicated formations, which our students performed beautifully.

“We are very grateful to all who helped to put this show together. We would not have been able to do this without the dedicated dancers and their parents who put in extra time and energy for our rehearsals,” Hyde said.

Dené Pieters portrayed the Sugar Plum Fairy in the show.

“As for the behind-the-scenes crew of families, returning students and teachers they were irreplaceable!

“It was a very successful show. The students enjoyed it and we have received positive feedback from all sides.

“The choreography, set and costume design, professionalism and preparation was praised by those who come to watch our show.”
