Children learn about the joys of reading and gardening

The Read and Plant Project is a way to promote sustainable food gardening, teach the importance of nutrition and get kids interested in reading.

The Topsy Foundation and Authentic Roots recently teamed up to launch the Read and Plant project at the Tswelopelo Educare Centre in Balfour.

The event kicked off with a story time session, where the children read a book called Sipho the Spinach and His World of Wonder.

The children learned that Sipho needs to be watered every day to grow strong and be able to give the children nutrition. They also recited a poem that talked about the importance of veggies for growing kids.

After storytime, the children planted their own Sipho the Spinach seeds.

After storytime, the children were able to plant their own Sipho the Spinach seeds. Even though some were a bit hesitant at first, they all had fun playing with the sand and planting the seeds in their ice cream containers.

The project is a way to promote sustainable food gardening, teach the importance of nutrition and get children interested in reading.
