Programmes exposes learners to prison life

The learners visited a correctional services facility.

Learners from Lesedi secondary schools briefly experienced life behind bars as part of a prison programme.

Other programme role players included the Sedibeng District Municipality Community Safety Forum, Lesedi Local Municipality, Community Safety Forum, Rand Water and SAPS. The learners visited Groenpunt Maximum Prison on April 24.

Participating schools were Kgoro ya Thuto Secondary School, Khanya Lesedi Secondary School, Mountain View and Kudung Middle School.

“The tour does not glamourise criminals or the stay in prison but rather dispels the myth that prison is five-star accommodation. The learners needed to see first-hand what the living conditions are and how overcrowding is a reality.

The welcoming was traumatic but gentle,” said Sergeant Moss Maluleke, Ratanda SAPS communications officer.

The learners spoke out against criminal activities and stated that schools need to be a safe place.
