Nigel High celebrates Mandela Day with cleaning initiative

“We are proud of our school and believe in the legacy of Nelson Mandela. If you combine our pride with his legacy, we can work together to ensure that Nigel High is recognised as one of the best schools in our community,”

Mandela Day is an annual global celebration that takes place on July 18 to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.

This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to reflect on Mandela’s legacy, celebrate his values and principles and to make a positive impact on the community.

Bophelo Makhange (15) is a Grade Eight learner at Nigel High and said Mandela Day should always be celebrated through spreading love and by doing community work.

It is with these intentions that Nigel High School did its bit for Mandela Day on July 19.

Learners were super excited for a school day where they replaced their books with mops and cleaning equipment as they cleaned the classrooms, washed the windows and tidied up the school grounds.

Learners celebrated Mandela Day on July 19 with a cleaning initiative on the schoolgrounds.

Ndumiso Matshika, president of the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) said that for the school, the celebration of Mandela Day each year embodies the spirit of community and that the learners do a spring cleaning of the school grounds each year.

Learners exchanged their books for brooms and mops to celebrate Mandela Day and clean the classrooms.

At the same time, the RCL focuses on cleaning areas surrounding the school grounds and in the community.

“We are proud of our school and believe in the legacy of Nelson Mandela. If you combine our pride with his legacy, we can work together to ensure that Nigel High is recognised as one of the best schools in our community,” said Zamajali Mpemvu, deputy president RCL.

The cleaning initiative ensured spotless floors, sparkling windows, decluttered classrooms and a neat school ground.

“Our spring cleaning at the school for Mandela Day signifies renewal and we hope that it will inspire fresh ideas among students and staff when they return to a clean, tidy and rejuvenated environment,” Mpemvu said.

The schoolgrounds of Nigel High were left squeaky clean on July 19 after a spring-cleaning day in celebration of Mandela Day.
