Tame zebras safe after fire sparks swift community response

As flames destroyed part of the zebra camp, Nigel residents jumped into action, proving once again that community makes all the difference.

A veldfire that broke out on July 15 near the Nigel Game Farm sparked quick action and an even quicker show of community spirit.

The fire is believed to have started in the park adjacent to the game farm and, fanned by strong winds, soon spread to a section of the farm where the zebras usually graze.

While the exact cause of the blaze remains unknown, what followed was a heartening reminder of the strength of the Nigel community.

Bales of lucerne are rolled out at the charred grazing grounds of the Nigel Game Farm, helping to restore feeding areas for the zebras after a recent veldfire.

Word of the fire spread rapidly on the Nigel Clean-Up Company WhatsApp group, and within minutes, concerned residents, local volunteers, Ekurhuleni Fire Services and other authorities rushed to the scene to help.

“Thanks to swift action, the flames were contained and extinguished before they could cause more serious damage,” said Andre Moolman from the Nigel Clean-Up Company.

“We are extremely relieved and grateful that none of the animals were harmed.”

Volunteers, local authorities, and generous donations helped to get bales of lucerne delivered at the Nigel Game Farm after a fire broke out and destroyed the feeding grounds where zebras graze.

Although a portion of the grazing land was scorched, the response from Ekurhuleni Fire Services, local businesses and residents was immediate. Bales of lucerne were donated and delivered to the farm, much to the delight of the tame zebras, who didn’t hesitate to come closer for a bite once the hay arrived.

“We are incredibly proud of our town and thankful to every individual who stepped in,” Moolman added.

“In times like these, it is clear that Nigel is more than just a town. It is a community with heart.”

Moolman encouraged the public to join the WhatsApp group. Contact him at 076 811 953.
