Heidelberg Race 4 Hope aims to raise support for elderly care facilities

The Lesedi Community Centre is calling on the community to take part in the Race 4 Hope on May 23, an event aimed at supporting elderly residents in need while offering a fun-filled day of sport and family entertainment.

The Lesedi Community Centre is set to host the Western Insurance Race 4 Hope on May 23, an event aimed at raising awareness and support for much-needed elderly care facilities in Heidelberg.

The initiative seeks to address the growing challenges faced by SASSA pensioners by working towards the establishment of old-age homes that will provide accommodation, essential services, material support and frail care for elderly residents in need.

Organiser from Lesedi Community Centre, Jaco Kritzinger, emphasised the initiative’s importance and the impact it aims to achieve within the community.

“Real change starts with a clear ‘why’, and for us, it is about responding to the urgent and growing need for proper elderly care in Heidelberg. There are many elderly residents who do not have access to the support and facilities they need, and through this initiative, we want to create a space where they can live with dignity, receive proper care and feel valued. This event is not just about raising funds, but about bringing the community together to be part of a meaningful and lasting solution,” he said.

Kritzinger added that The Race 4 Hope will offer a range of trail-running and mountain-biking events, catering to participants of all fitness levels.

“The routes will take participants through scenic farm environments, including sections through game camps, with views of the Johannesburg skyline in the distance. In addition to the sporting activities, we will feature a family fun day for all ages.

“Entertainment includes music from Lekker FM, giveaways and a variety of activities for children such as jumping castles, face painting, dodgeball and a dedicated race track for toddlers,” he said.

Online entries close on May 22, with late entries available on race day, subject to an additional fee.

Participants are urged to adhere to all event rules, including attending race briefings and ensuring cyclists wear helmets. All routes will be monitored by marshals and volunteers to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for participants.
