Update: Lesedi Local Municipality confirms ongoing talks with Rand Water to resolve water crisis

Lesedi Local Municipality says it is working with Rand Water and the Gauteng Provincial Government to restore water supply to Ext 23 and other parts of Ratanda, but residents remain frustrated as no timeline has been provided

Lesedi Local Municipality has confirmed that it is engaged in ongoing discussions with Rand Water and the Gauteng Provincial Government as efforts continue to resolve the prolonged water crisis affecting Ext 23 and other parts of Ratanda.

The confirmation comes after days of community unrest, with residents taking to the streets to protest against persistent water shortages that have left many households without a reliable water supply for weeks.

Executive Mayor Mluleki Nkosi addressed residents on July 1, acknowledging the seriousness of the crisis and assuring the community that the municipality is working with Rand Water to restore normal water supply.

He also confirmed that assistance has been requested from the Gauteng Provincial Government to help find a sustainable, long-term solution for communities across Lesedi.

“We understand the frustration and hardship our residents are experiencing. The municipality remains in constant engagement with Rand Water and provincial authorities to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. We ask for patience while these discussions continue, and we will continue to keep the community informed of any developments,” he said.

The mayor said he would return to provide further updates and communicate the way forward once progress has been made. However, he did not provide a timeframe for when water supply would be fully restored.

Nkosi also cautioned residents that even after supply is restored, water will not immediately flow from household taps as the municipality’s reservoirs must first be replenished before water can be distributed throughout the reticulation network.

The municipality’s update comes as many residents say they have been forced to rely on water tankers, neighbours and alternative water sources to meet their daily needs.

Resident Nthabiseng Moloi said the prolonged shortages have placed an enormous strain on families.

“We have gone through weeks of uncertainty without knowing when water will return. Every day we have to look for water just to cook, clean and keep our children healthy. We appreciate that the municipality is talking to Rand Water, but what we really need now is action and a permanent solution,” she said.

Kgothatso Ragoale said the community wants clear communication from authorities.

“People are exhausted and frustrated because water is a basic human necessity. We understand that these problems cannot always be solved overnight, but residents deserve honest updates and realistic timelines. We hope these engagements will finally bring lasting change,” he said.

Lerato Molapo said the crisis has disrupted everyday life. “The lack of water has affected everyone. Businesses, schools and households are all struggling. We just want to wake up knowing that water will be available when we open our taps. We are hoping the municipality, Rand Water and the provincial government will work together to resolve this crisis once and for all,” she said.
