The Heidelberg community is mourning the death of former resident and Hoër Volkskool alumnus Wessel van Dyk, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a head-on collision while cycling along Durban’s beachfront.

The fatal crash occurred on July 25, when Van Dyk was training on the popular 5km beachfront cycling route.

According to reports, a vehicle allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road collided head-on with the cyclist.

Van Dyk was rushed to hospital for medical treatment but later died from his injuries on July 26.

His death has sent shockwaves through the Durban cycling community, where he was well known, and among family, friends and former classmates in Heidelberg.

Following the tragedy, Van Dyk’s family appointed an accident specialist to help reconstruct the events leading up to the collision and determine exactly what happened. The beachfront route where the crash occurred is a popular training circuit used by many cyclists.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested after the incident.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Tributes have poured in from friends, fellow cyclists and members of the community, who have remembered Van Dyk as a respected and dedicated cyclist.

Many have also expressed their condolences to his two daughters, family and loved ones.
