Sedibeng Men and Boys urged to take action against HIV and gender-based violence
Stakeholders gathered at Kwazenzele Community Hall on October 28 to discuss men’s health, HIV prevention, mental well-being and the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.
Men and boys have been urged to take greater responsibility for addressing HIV and Aids, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections and gender-based violence and femicide.
The call was highlighted during the Sedibeng Men and Boys Parliament held at Kwazenzele Community Hall on October 28.
Sedibeng Executive Mayor Clr Lerato Maloka and AIDS Council co-chairperson Zwelo Mqwati led the engagement, in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and Lesedi Local Municipality.
The Speaker of Council, Clr Phindi Mpemvu, and ward councillor Smith Mnyakeni represented Lesedi Local Municipality.
The sitting was held under the theme, “Ending AIDS by 2030 Starts with Access and Commitment: Men and Boys Taking Accountability for HIV and Aids, TB, STIs and Gender-Based Violence and Femicide”.
The parliament provided a platform for discussions on men’s health, mental well-being, positive masculinity and strategies to prevent GBVF.
Participants emphasised the importance of translating discussions into practical community interventions, including encouraging regular HIV testing, promoting adherence to treatment and improving access to healthcare services and psychosocial support.
The engagement also highlighted the role men and boys can play in promoting responsible leadership, challenging harmful behaviours and strengthening efforts to build safer and healthier communities.
