EMPD K9 Unit uncovers drugs, vapes and weapons in Nigel school search
Learners were also engaged on the dangers of gangsterism, gang violence, bullying and substance abuse during the joint operation.
The EMPD K9 Unit and Eastern Region Social Crime Prevention Unit officers, in collaboration with the SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, the Department of Education and other law enforcement stakeholders, conducted a search-and-seizure operation at high schools in the Nigel area on August 19.
According to the EMPD, the operation forms part of ongoing collaborative efforts to promote safety in schools and to prevent dangerous weapons, drugs and other illegal items from entering or being kept on school premises.
During the operation, law enforcement officers conducted searches at schools and engaged with learners on issues including gangsterism, gang violence and bullying.
Officers also highlighted the consequences of criminal activities and substance abuse, emphasising the importance of making responsible choices and maintaining a safe learning environment.

K9 Unit officers deployed a sniffer dog to search classrooms, bathrooms and other areas of the school premises for illegal substances and dangerous weapons.
During the search, officers discovered vapes, ziplock bag containing dagga, boxes of matches, cigarettes and dangerous weapons in the possession of learners.
The EMPD, together with its law enforcement and community safety partners, will continue conducting similar operations at schools across the City of Ekurhuleni.
These initiatives are aimed at safeguarding learners and educators, preventing crime and substance abuse, and fostering a secure environment conducive to teaching and learning.
