Heidelberg Hospital marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month with educational quiz
Hospital staff tested their knowledge of breast cancer through an educational quiz highlighting the importance of awareness, regular self-examinations and early detection.
Heidelberg Hospital management and staff marked the final day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month on October 31 with an educational quiz to raise awareness of the disease and the importance of early detection.
Spearheaded by the hospital’s X-ray Unit, the initiative challenged participants to answer true-or-false questions about breast cancer, testing their knowledge of common myths and facts.
Prizes were awarded to participants. The activity also highlighted the importance of regular breast self-examinations and seeking medical attention when unusual changes are noticed.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in South Africa.
However, men can also develop the disease, although cases are less common. Warning signs include lumps in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, nipple discharge and skin changes.
Women aged 40 and older are encouraged to discuss regular mammogram screening with their healthcare providers.
Early detection matters because it can improve treatment outcomes and increase survival chances.
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are among the lifestyle factors associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
Through the initiative, Heidelberg Hospital encouraged staff and the wider community to remain informed, prioritise regular health checks and remember that breast cancer awareness should extend beyond October.
