Heidelberg overpower Sasolburg in thrilling Merlin League opener

The Heidelberg Rugby Club’s first team produced an impressive all-round display to defeat Sasolburg Cobras 50-32 in their opening Valke Rugby Merlin League clash at Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg.

Heidelberg Rugby Club’s first team made a commanding start to the 2026 Valke Rugby Merlin League season with an impressive 50-32 victory over Sasolburg Cobras Rugby Club on May 9 at Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg.

Sasolburg opened the scoring early to take a 7-0 lead, but the Berge responded strongly and worked their way to a narrow 17-14 advantage at halftime.

The home side stepped up the intensity in the second half and capitalised on their chances, eventually pulling away in the final quarter to secure a convincing win in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Tries for Heidelberg were scored by Damien Grace, Frikkie Jansen, Nantus Mouton, Zander du Toit, Jannie Hough, Brennan Ryan, Henry van Biljon and Mpho Mbatha. Hough added three conversions, while Francois Vorster slotted a further two.

Mouton, who celebrated his 50th appearance for the Berge, delivered a standout performance and was deservedly named player of the match.

Heidelberg recorded further success as the second team edged Sasolburg 14-12 in a closely contested encounter, showing great determination to secure the victory.
