Heidelberg Rugby Club produced a commanding all-round performance against VUT Rugby Club at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark on May 16, with both senior sides recording convincing victories in the second round of the Valke Rugby Merlin League.

The Heidelberg first team delivered one of their most dominant displays of the season, dismantling VUT 62-12 in a high-tempo encounter characterised by clinical finishing, structured attacking play, and relentless defensive pressure.

From the opening exchanges, Heidelberg controlled possession and territory, stretching the VUT defence with quick ball movement and effective support play.

Their forwards laid a solid platform at set-pieces and breakdowns, while the backs exploited space out wide to devastating effect.

Heidelberg crossed the try line 10 times during the encounter, with Nantus Mouton, Tristan Steyn, captain Zander du Toit, Jannie Hough and Francois Vorster each contributing significantly to the scoreboard.

Steyn, Du Toit, Hough and Vorster all grabbed braces, while Gerhard Breedt also added his name to the scoresheet.

Vorster was influential with the boot, converting five tries, while Hough added another successful conversion as Heidelberg maintained their dominance throughout the contest. Defensively, Heidelberg remained disciplined and organised, limiting VUT’s attacking opportunities and applying constant pressure across the field.
