Heidelberg Rugby Club’s first team maintained their impressive form in the Valke Rugby Merlin League with a dominant 59-0 victory over Oos Rand Polisie on July 18 at the B-field of Springs Rugby Club.

The Berge produced another polished performance, combining disciplined defence with clinical finishing to keep their opponents scoreless while crossing the try line on nine occasions.

Despite the continued absence of injured captain Zander du Toit, Heidelberg have continued to build momentum as the season progresses.

The side has displayed increasing confidence and cohesion in recent weeks, while the club’s growing squad depth has been evident through the development of its U21 team and the quality of players stepping up when called upon.

Francois Vorster enjoyed a standout afternoon, scoring two tries and successfully converting seven of Heidelberg’s nine tries to finish with an outstanding personal tally of 24 points.

Elbie Mouton and Jason Koen also crossed the whitewash twice each, while Julian Myburgh, Johan Ness and Jannie Hough added a try apiece to complete the rout.

The comprehensive victory underlined Heidelberg’s growing confidence as they continue to strengthen their position in the league with another convincing display.

The club’s second team, however, were unable to replicate the first team’s success, suffering a 22-12 defeat to Katlehong Spartans.

After taking a narrow 7-3 lead into the halftime break, Heidelberg struggled to maintain their intensity in the second half as the Spartans capitalised on opportunities to overturn the deficit.

Although the result was disappointing, the second team has shown throughout the season that it possesses the talent to compete with the league’s strongest sides.

Greater consistency and improved discipline will be key as they look to bounce back in the coming weeks.
