Heidelberg Rugby Club’s first team secured a crucial home semi-final in the 2026 Valke Rugby Merlin League despite suffering a hard-fought 26-22 defeat to unbeaten NWU VC Rugby in Vanderbijlpark on August 1.
While the result ended Heidelberg’s hopes of toppling the league leaders, the valuable losing bonus point was enough to guarantee the Berge a home semi-final on August 15, rewarding an impressive league campaign.

The match lived up to expectations as two of the competition’s strongest sides produced an entertaining and fiercely contested encounter.
Heidelberg, hampered by the absence of several influential players through injury, showed tremendous character and remained within striking distance until the final whistle.

The visitors enjoyed long periods of dominance in the set pieces, particularly in the scrums, where they consistently put the hosts under pressure. However, Heidelberg were left frustrated as they felt their superiority in that department was not always reflected in the decisions of the match officials.
NWU took a narrow 13-8 lead into the half-time break after capitalising on their scoring opportunities.

Heidelberg responded with determination in the second half, outscoring the students 14-13, but ultimately fell just four points short in a match decided by fine margins.
Despite the defeat, the performance highlighted the depth and resilience within the Heidelberg squad, with several players stepping up in the absence of experienced teammates.
Heidelberg’s points came through tries by Henry van Biljon, Gerhard Breedt and Ruhan Oosthuizen, while Francois Vorster added two conversions and a penalty.
