Community protests outside court

Community members protested outside the Nigel Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

A group from the Alra Park Community Forum protested outside the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on September 8 where the alleged murderer of 21-year-old Kholiwe Mofokeng was due to appear in court.

The group of protesters called for the accused in the case not to be granted bail.

The 26-year-old suspect was arrested for murder on August 31 after he allegedly attempted suicide at the plots on Balfour Road.

When the police arrived on the scene, they were informed he had tried to drown himself.

During questioning, he stated that he killed his girlfriend in Alra Park and locked her two children in the house.
When the police proceeded to the address, they found the deceased lying on the floor, covered with a duvet with no visible injuries.

“We want to ensure that justice will prevail,” said the chairperson of the Alra Park Community Forum, Amy Amigo.
“We feel many other cases have been purely neglected based on so-called lack of evidence, and justice is then being denied to these families, which in our view is never fair and creates less confidence in our legal system.”

The case is still under investigation and the accused remains in custody.

The bail application hearing has been postponed to September 15.
