Complainant sentenced for perjury

Woman lies about to police about rape.

A rape complainant was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment suspended for three years or a R4 000 fine after being found guilty of perjury.
Simphiwe Truddy Khumalo (18) of eMadamini reported a rape case to the police, claiming she was raped by her boyfriend’s friend.
Investigating officer Sgt Thomo of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigated the case and found that the complainant had lied to the police.
Simphiwe was then charged for perjury, appeared in court and was released on bail.
After several postponements of the case, she was found guilty and sentenced last Thursday.
The FCS Unit welcomed the sentence and said this served as a message to the community not to report false cases to the police.
