Woman sentenced for perjury

"This case must sound a warning."

A 29-year-old woman, Thabisile Confidence Buhlase, was found guilty of perjury and defeating the ends of justice in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Friday 21 July.

She was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment or a fine of R2 000. Half of the sentence was suspended for five years.

The court heard that Buhlase had falsely reported a case of rape on 7 November last year.

Subsequent investigations by the Ermelo Police’s Family Violence and Child Protection Services unit (FCS) revealed that Buhlase had concocted the story of rape and that the supposed “rapist” had been falsely accused.

The commander of the Ermelo FCS unit, Lt JJ Mahlangu, said this case must sound a warning to the public that reporting false crimes and making unfounded accusations against innocent people is a criminal offence and will be dealt with harshly by the courts of law.

He applauded members of the FCS unit for their thorough investigative work.
