Firefighters return from Canada
The upbeat South African crew with their song and dance were well received in Canada as they also appeared in the local and national media as well as Canadian Broadcast Corporation.
The first group of South African firefighters has returned home with praise from the Canadian Interagency Forest Centre (CIFFC).
They were praised for their ethic of hard work while they were part of international teams fighting multiple fires in Canada during July and August.
Sicelo Nkambule (Ermelo), Mfan’khona Nkosi (Badplaas), Mbongeni Mazibuko (Badplaas), Zakhele Vilakazi (Mayflower), Sphamandla Nkosi (Mayflower) and Ntokozo Zwane (Mayflower) representing Gert Sibande District Municipality were part of the crew representing South Africa.
The first group of 24 of the 48 South Africans helping in Canada are members of the Working on Fire (WoF) programme who were in Canada since 21 July this year as part of a resource-sharing arrangement between Canadian firefighting agencies and South Africa.
The CIFFC released a positive crew performance report which applauded the South Africans’ physical fitness, productivity, health and safety operations.

The crew was happy to return home and will be spending some time with their families before re-joining their respective WoF teams throughout the country.
