Dead newborn baby buried in yard

The body was exhumed and the police were called in.

Lindiwe Zwane (29), who was arrested and charged for concealing the death of her newborn baby, remains behind bars in the Ermelo Correctional Centre after failing to pay bail of R5 000 last week.

She first appeared in the Chrissiesmeer Periodical Court on 6 August where she was denied bail and police awaited the outcome of the forensic investigation. She again appeared in court last week where she was granted bail.

She again appeared in court on Thursday (yesterday) where she asked for a reduced bail fee as she is unemployed and the Chrissiesmeer Police confirmed that the baby had died of natural causes.

Lindiwe was arrested after her younger sister told their mother that Lindiwe had buried a child in the backyard. She went into labour on the Wednesday and eventually gave birth in her bedroom.

According to the police, the suspect is alleged to have passed out, waking up in the morning with the baby’s lifeless body on the floor.

From fear, she did not tell her family members about the ordeal and decided to wrap the dead baby in a blanket, put him in a box and bury him in the yard on Thursday.

The body was exhumed and the police were called in.
