Ward 6 stream gets a face lift
Members of the community were educated on how to keep their environment clean.
The Khuthala Environmental Group headed by Philani Mngomezulu and Zethu Hlatshwayo in partnership with the Department of Agriculture hosted a cleaning and awareness campaign in Wesselton, Ward 6 last Wednesday.
During the campaign, members of the community were educated on how to keep their environment clean, the importance of nature and water preservation and to discourage illegal dumping.
Members of the Community Working Programme, residents and the environmental group all took part in the clean-up.
Mr Milton Simelane (86) is one of the gardeners supporting a family through a gardening project since 1996. He was overjoyed about the campaign.
Ms Zanele Nsibande, Senior Environmental Officer at the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Administration (DARDLA), said this was an ongoing project that the department would continue to support.
Ward 6 sector manager W/O Khumalo from the Ermelo Police approached the environmental group after a series of talks with residents about the state of the stream they use for their livelihood.
During the clean-up, waste was removed from a stream making it easier for the free flow of water into the pipes that are used for irrigation.
Environmental officers were also nominated to ensure that the area is kept clean and to look out for people illegally dumping near or into the stream.
They were given emergency telephone numbers to report anyone violating the no-dumping rule.
The environmental group thanked everyone who participated, including members of the community, Highveld Environmental Justice Network, Community Work Programme (CWP), as well as the Action Aid for funding the awareness programme.
They also said they would invite the local municipality to consider fencing the area to keep out stray animals.
