Thief caught stealing numbers

It is suspected that the items were destined to be sold at a scrap metal dealer.

A suspected thief was caught with several brass and metal house-numbers and letters in his posession in Jansen Street on Wednesday evening. The numbers, as well as a broken brass panel of a postbox were stolen off walls and gates of residences in town.

It is suspected that the items were destined to be sold at a scrap metal dealer.

The suspect was seen crouching outside the gate of a residential property soon after sunset.

The resident went to investigate after hearing the sound of metal falling, but the suspect jumped up and ran away.

He was chased down and caught and requested to open his “booty bag.” Instead he threw the bag down and ran away.

The bag was found to contain brass and and metal numbers and letters that had been removed from walls, gates and ornamental structures in front of properties in the area.

Among the numbers was one that had been removed from the entrance to the residents property only minutes before.
