Chief Whip of GSDM helps GS TVET College Sibaniseftu Campus soup kitchen
Sibanesetfu campus is the only campus in GS College running a soup kitchen that feeds more than 100 students daily.
The Gert Sibande TVET College, Sibanesetfu Campus recently received much needed help from the Whip of Council in the Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM), Mr Trevor Nkosi, after he gave the campus groceries for their soup kitchen and dignitary packs for the students.
Sibanesetfu Campus is the only campus in GS College running a soup kitchen that feeds more than a hundred students daily.
The intervention by the Chief Whip is a result of a meeting with the college’s Students Representatives Council (SRC), where the Chief Whip’s office was informed of the challenges faced by the students on a daily basis.
Due to challenges facing NSFAS in allocating funds to students, a number of the students still have not received their bursaries.
In his address on the day, Mr Nkosi said he could not just stand by and not do anything to assist the college.
“This is the only campus that has done something to ensure that students go to class on a full stomach and we must really applaud the creative minds that came with the idea,” Mr Nkosi said.
The Chief Whip further explained that going to class on an empty stomach is no child’s play and he will do his best to continue helping the campus by encouraging others and local business people to also lend a helping hand.
The soup kitchen also receive help from the college’s management, who on regular basis fork out money from their own pockets to keep it going.
They are also looking for donations with groceries to feed more students on a daily basis and to ensure that the students have one less worry when they attend classes.
