South African Communist Party and farm employees hands over a memorandum to Scheepers Boerdery in Ermelo

To this Mr Scheepers responded that he does not have a problem with employees claiming their rights, but said that he does have a problem when farmers make false accusations and label him a human rights abuser.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) and employees of Bernard Scheepers Boerdery as well as other farmers in the area, handed over a memorandum to Mr Bernard Scheepers on 27 May, listing their grievances about numerous issues.

Some of their grievances and demands are:

• Stop unlawful salary deductions for their cattle grazing on his land

• Previous employees who went on pension to be given severance pay within 48-hours

• That Mr Scheepers report all injuries his workers might sustain while in his employment to be reported to the Department of Labour

To this Mr Scheepers responded that he does not have a problem with employees claiming their rights, but said that he does have a problem when farmers make false accusations and label him a human rights abuser.

“Our workers are under the impression that we are breaking various laws and rights that have resulted in them singing ‘kill all the farmers of South Africa’.”
