CAROLINA – Trio were arrested in connection with tampering with,damaging or destroying essential infrastructure and appeared in Carolina Magistrate’s Court on October 22.
According to Sgt Thabang Mokwana, the spokesman for Carolina police, three men aged between 18 and 29 were arrested by the Carolina police for contravening the Criminal Amendment Act 18 of 2015, on October 21 at about 10:00.
“This was after the police were called to the scene where the three men were found dismantling the Eskom Transformer at Jessieville Farm Carolina,” he said.
He added according to the information received from the Farm owner who resides closer to the transformer, the electricity went off and he went to investigate.
That is when the trio were found busy tampering with the transformer.
Sgt Mokwana said the police were called and the trio who attempted to flee from the scene were arrested by the police with the help from security members who are patrolling the forest in the farm.
Carolina police have been receiving an alarming number of cases where Eskom’s transformers were damaged and stolen in surrounding farms.
The damage is estimated at R65 000 the suspects made their first court appearance.
