Four armed robbers entered Ackermans at the Boxer Centre at about 13:00, pretending to be customers.

The suspects then forced staff to open the cash register.

“The manager was told to open the cellphone display cabinet, and to put the phones in a bag,” Captain Carla Prinsloo, spokesperson for Ermelo police, said.

The manager was able to press the panic button and alert ACSU members who reacted swiftly.

As they approached Ackermans the suspects opened fire on them, and they returned fire.

According to Prinsloo, two suspects were injured and the other two escaped.

The injured suspects were taken to hospital, where one suspect died upon arrival.
