Four armed robbers entered Ackermans at the Boxer Centre at about 13:00, pretending to be customers.
One suspect enquired about cellphones, before he pointed a firearm at a staff member.
The suspects then forced staff to open the cash register.
“The manager was told to open the cellphone display cabinet, and to put the phones in a bag,” Captain Carla Prinsloo, spokesperson for Ermelo police, said.
The manager was able to press the panic button and alert ACSU members who reacted swiftly.
As they approached Ackermans the suspects opened fire on them, and they returned fire.
According to Prinsloo, two suspects were injured and the other two escaped.
The injured suspects were taken to hospital, where one suspect died upon arrival.
The Police recovered firearms, as well as the cellphones which the suspects intended to take.
ERMELO – An armed robbery took place at the Boxer Centre on 20 July.
Fatalities have been reported.
Highvelder is currently on the scene and spoke to Oubaas de Jager, owner of ACSU.
According to him, the alleged culprits fired-off about 40 rounds on reaction officers of ACSU.
“ACSU returned fire, killing two and wounding another of the alleged perpetrators,” he claimed
Some of the alleged criminals managed to get away, it is not clear as yet how many were involved.
