Mental health clinic opens in Ermelo to increase quality treatment

The mental unit is the first of its kind mental health unit in the Gert Sibande District.

ERMELO – The MEC for health in Mpumalanga, Sasekani Manzini, opened the mental health ward at Ermelo Hospital on August 17.

This is the first of its kind mental health unit in the Gert Sibande District.

“The Mpumalanga Department of Health is on a continuous mission to improve the quality of health and well-being of all people,” Manzini said.

During the official opening she also stated that this forms part of the government’s efforts to increase access to quality mental healthcare and effective treatment for people.

It has been operational since April 1 2023. The ward has 30 beds and an outpatient section.

It will accommodate patients from Gert Sibande and Nkangala districts.

The unit will cater for patients who have been diagnosed with mental illness such as schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder.

The MEC was accompanied by the executive mayor of Msukaligwa Local Municipality, Mapulane Precious Nkosi, as well as representatives of Gert Sibande District Municipality.
