Alleged gang member killed in Piet-Retief

Upon arrival, they found the body of a 20-year-old man on the ground with multiple injuries to his upper body. He was pronounced dead by the paramedics.

An alleged gang member was reportedly attacked and killed by a group of suspects in eMkhondo, formerly Piet Retief, on July 12.

According to Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, a provincial police spokesperson, the incident is believed to be gang-related. It reportedly occurred in Thandukukhanya.

Community members informed the police at about 16:30 of a person being attacked, and some officers were dispatched to the scene.

He was pronounced dead by the paramedics.

“Information to the police’s disposal indicated the victim had been chased by the suspects from Mangosuthu Section to the Mafred Homes Section, where he was severely attacked, and he succumbed to his injuries,” Mohlala said.

He said the police are investigating a murder case, and the motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.

During the investigation, the police recovered a shovel with blood stains.

Two suspects, aged 23 and 17, were arrested on July 13 in connection with the murder.

They appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on July 14, facing a murder charge.
