Raw sewage flow in Ermelo has residents sick

The residents claimed they cannot sit and relax in their own gardens due to the odour.

ERMELO – The corner of Vlok and Taute streets has been seeing raw sewage overflowing for these past two weeks, causing distress to the area’s residents.

Nicholas Mavimbela, a resident, shared his concerns about the issue, stating that the smell is unbearable, especially when the wind blows in a certain direction, and he and others cannot sit and relax in their gardens due to the odour.

The stench has also forced residents to keep their windows permanently shut, resulting in no fresh air circulating in their homes.

This has caused health concerns, such as sinuses, to develop among them according to the residents.

Mavimbela is worried about the impact of the sewage overflow on the environment.

“Hadedas died from drinking that sewage water,” he said.

Mavimbela also mentioned that the Hadedas carcasses have been picked up by people passing by, he asked why they are taking the birds, their answer to him was “to eat it.”

Mandla Zwane, spokesperson for the Msukaligwa Local Municipality, has not commented by the time of going to press.
