Motorcycle enthusiasts cruise for a cause

Bikers countrywide are gearing up for the 5th annual “Ride for a Child” charity motorbike ride, spanning an impressive 7 000 km.

Doctor André Hattingh of Pediatric Care Africa will spearhead the fundraising effort alongside fellow motorcyclists, aiming to shed light on the challenges faced by children requiring surgery and medical treatment. These children, often orphaned or born into families with limited financial means, struggle to access the necessary care due to financial constraints.

This year, though, Hatting wants the biking community to turn it into a historic and record-breaking event.

World record attempt

Named “Ride for a Child,” this attempt to break a world record is set for Saturday, February 24. Pediatric Care Africa is calling on all motorbike clubs, organisations, and riders countrywide to join Hattingh in this ride. The record attempt will be carried out on the N2 highway towards George, with the starting point 50 km before the Caltex Mentors Plaza.

To establish the record, a minimum of 4,500 motorbikes must ride in a staggered formation for the final kilometres to Jeffreys Bay, culminating at Mentors Country Estate, the designated finish line. The record attempt will be officially lodged with RecordSetters in the USA.

How the day unfolds

Bikers will start from different points, meet up, and ride together. The ride kicks off at 12:00, with a slow procession past the waiting bikers. Safety officers, traffic officers, MC marshals, and the police will ensure a secure journey. The line of bikes is expected to reach up to 48 km in length, creating a visually stunning and record-breaking spectacle.

Celebration at the finish line

The journey wraps up at Mentors Country Estate in Jeffreys Bay around 13:00. There will be sufficient parking, restroom facilities, an on-going music festival, food stalls, and, notably, refreshing cold beer. For those opting to stay overnight, accommodation discounts are offered, and there’s also a Sunday morning church service available for those interested.

Join the cause – make a difference

Participation is easy – just book early and pay a participation fee of R100 for riders and R50 for pillions. All funds will go directly to children’s medical care and surgeries. Special record attempt cloth, steel badges, and Hatting’s cookbook, “Cooking with Doc,” will be available for sale, with all proceeds benefiting Pediatric Care Africa.

“Mark your calendars for the 24th and show the world what South African bikers can do. Join the ride, break records, and make a difference in the lives of children who need our help!” Joyce Crompvoets, head of office at Pediatric Care Africa, concluded.
