SAPS leads school search and awareness campaign

While no major weapons were found, several items - including a nail clipper, medication, and a vape - were found abandoned outside a classroom.

CHRISSIESMEER – The local SAPS teamed up with various departments to conduct a random search and awareness campaign at Lake Chrissie Secondary School on February 19 to ensure learner safety.

The operation was a joint effort involving the Department of Education, Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Department of Social Development, the SAPS K9 Unit, Department of Correctional Services, and the Community Policing Forum.

The primary goal was to find and confiscate any items prohibited on school grounds.

During the exercise, learners and their bags were searched.

While no major weapons were found on individuals, several items – including a nail clipper, medication, and a vape – were found abandoned outside a classroom.

Following the search, officials shifted focus to education. Learners were addressed on several high-risk issues that threaten their safety and future.

These included gangsterism and bullying, the danger of carrying weapons, risks of hitchhiking, substance abuse and gender-based violence and femicide.

The initiative aimed to promote responsible behaviour and encourage the youth to get involved in crime prevention.

By strengthening the partnership between the police, schools, and parents, stakeholders hope to create a secure environment where learners can focus on their education.

Learners were reminded that safety is a team effort and were encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour or criminal activity by calling the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or using the My SAPS app.
