Devani Murugas is a Speech-Language and Feeding Therapist with many years experience. She has worked in a rehabilitation centre, a special school, hospitals, clinics, in private practice and as a UKZN tutor.

A speech therapist is a health professional. Accordingly, most medical aids cover therapy to at least some extent. Based on assessment, the parent or client will be advised regarding how many sessions may be necessary. This will be based on individual needs established from the assessment. Goals will be discussed and set together with the client or parent. It is not always advisable to ‘wait and see’ as difficulties with speech and language can impact literacy development, or may become increasingly difficult to address at a later stage. Adequate communication skills are vital to be able to understand, express oneself and socialize in every environment, hence speech therapy should be seen as a worthwhile short-term investment reaping a lifetime of future gains.
