Tatum makes waves
The young athlete looks forward to taking on the next competition in Port Elizabeth.
WESTVILLE’S Tatum Botha raked in a slew of awards in the U14 category at the SPAR Sola KZN Nipper Surf Lifesaving Champs recently.
She won the surf swim, run-swim-run and the Iron Lady. The wins came off a disappointing first race in the Malibu board final.
“After leading the Mali board race I lost my board on a wave that sucked me up and knocked me off. I came seventh in the race and it taught me that anything could happen in this sport. It was such a humbling experience,” she said.
The run-swim-run event was next on her list of races and she was determined to make a strong comeback.

“The races were tough due to the rain and wind that picked up at the end of the day. I was even more confident about the surf swim as I just knew I could do it. I was very happy with my outcome in the competition,” said an elated Tatum.
Tatum is now gearing up to compete in the General Tire SA Nipper Lifesaving Champs in Port Elizabeth in April where she will compete in the surf and stillwater events over a six-day period.
