KZN floods: Death toll rises as province works to clean up path of destruction

Over the past few days heavy rain and floods have ravaged KwaZulu-Natal. Have a look at some of the latest headlines in the province.

The death toll from the recent floods in KwaZulu-Natal has risen to more than 250.

This was confirmed by Nomagugu Simelane, MEC for Health in the province, on Wednesday afternoon.

Local authorities have been hard at work to rescue those trapped by floods, assessing damage and trying to clean up after heavy floods swept through large parts of the province.

Westville woman (55) and grandson (5) still missing

The devastation caused to a Westville home due to heavy rainfall.

Hundreds of posts appealing for prayer and the rescue of Paula Taylor and her grandson, Laeeq Napier have flooded social media.

The two were victims of the catastrophic floods which ravaged large parts of Durban from Monday night. By Wednesday, April 13, the death toll reached 45 with deaths reported across Durban.

Interruption of water supply in several KZN areas

Several areas around Durban are without water. This after heavy rains battered large parts of the city causing extensive damage.

In a statement, the eThekwini Municipality said the interruption is due to heavy rains that have caused substantial damage to uMgeni Water infrastructure.

Floods hit Prospecton industries hard

Cars at the Toyota plant in Prospecton submerged in water.

The South Durban Industrial Basin has been hit hard by the recent heavy rains, with the damage expected to run into billions of rands.

The N2 road, Toyota, the Refinery Road container depot, and Sapref were among those hardest hit. On Wednesday, April 12, Toyota announced that operations at the plant were suspended after coming to a halt on Monday night due to flooding.

The torrential downpour in KZN caused total destruction.

As clean-up operations begin, the sheer destruction left in the wake of the torrential downpour lashed out on areas in KwaZulu-Natal has become apparent.

Long standing bridges connecting towns have been damaged beyond repair. Countless roads have been left completely destroyed by strong torrents of water.
