Unlicensed teen driver kills boy

An 18-year-old suspect appeared in the KwaMsane Magistrates’ Court on Monday facing a charge of culpable homicide after a hit-and-run left one boy injured and another dead.

Phindile Mlambo (12) was killed, and Dumoluhle Masuku (4) was seriously injured following the accident, which occurred in the Machibini area of KwaMsane, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday.

According to police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, Thembinkosi Sibiya, who had no driver’s licence, was given the car by his father, Zululand Observer reported.

It is believed Sibiya had been driving down the road when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to plow into the two boys.

He then reportedly fled the scene, but was later brought to KwaMsane Police Station by his parents, where he was later arrested.

Phindile died on the scene, and Dumokuhle was taken to hospital.

Last week, a six-year-old girl died after she and her father were run over in Montclair, Durban, by an alleged drunk driver.

The father reportedly sustained various injuries, including a dislocated shoulder, while the preschooler suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene.

The driver was subsequently arrested and was expected to appear in court to face charges of culpable homicide.
