WATCH: Alberton learner is the youngest player at Blackball SA Championships

Little Louvan Becker made waves on the green felt at the recent National Blackball Federation’s SA Blackball Championship 2021 held at Gold Reef City.

At age eight Louvan is the youngest competitor taking part in the championship where the youngest age group is under 14.

As an avid golfer, already taking up the clubs at age two, Louvan’s journey with pool began when his coaches suggested it as a way to help him improve his putting.

He began playing pool on a table at home around the age of five. This is where the pool bug bit and Louvan now says he cannot decide which sport he enjoys more.

The lead up to the SA championship was when the management of the local league in which Louvan plays, the Y-Not Blackball League, suggested that he plays the provincial trials.

At the trials, Louvan excelled despite his age and was chosen to represent the provincial team in the u-18 division.
Louvan represented Gauteng Blackball’s Cheeky Tigers team at the SA championships.

The SA championship had to be postponed twice due to the Covid-19 restriction.

“I’m a bit nervous,” said Louvan when asked about his feelings before the SA championship games. “But I’m very excited about it.”

Throughout the days of the competition, Louvan competed in both the team and individual competitions.

Many games were played throughout the day with sessions lasting up to 21:00.

“My favourite part of the pool is sinking the black ball,” said Louvan.

As the youngest player, Louvan had the honour of officially opening the tournament by taking the first shot of the championship.

Louvan is currently in Grade Two in Laerskool Randhart. He is an avid sportsman and aside from his golf and pool, he plays rugby at the Lifestyle Alberton Rugby Club.

One day when Louvan is done with school, he plans to continue with sports and play professionally. His main focus is golf in which he has already received accolades.
