Medals for HCA marimba band

The HCA Marimba bands came home with 3 golds and a silver.

CURRO Hillcrest Christian Academy’s Intermediate Phase and High School Marimba bands excelled at the recent Education Africa’s second International Steelpan and Marimba Festival held at St Benedict’s College in Gauteng.

Of the two categories entered by the Intermediate Phase, a first and a second place were attained and the high school band won both their categories.Coach Holloway also won the adult composition prize for his piece, “Marikana” – a descriptive piece based on the events of the Marikana tragedy.

The two bands, comprising 41 members, gave a superb performance at Curro Serengetti Academy before spending the weekend competing and attending workshops and a concert at the festival. On the Saturday, the children participated in a massed marimba, choir, rap, steel pan, and drum event which was televised live by three television crews and was a collaboration put together on the day in honour of Madiba.

The highly respected adjudication panel consisting of Alex Jacobowitz (the world’s top performing marimba artist from Germany), Andy Narrell (Judged the top steel pan artist in the world from the USA) and Pops Mohammed (well known South African composer, multi – instrumentalist, jazz musician, producer and board member of the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra) had to judge over 200 items.

All the work displayed by over 90 institutions from the UK, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and all over South Africa was of incredibly high standard.
