Just One Tin to feed the hungry
The Rotary Club of Kloof assisted the staff at Kloof Library to distribute the tinned food to children's homes in the highway area.
THOUSANDS of tins of food were collected in the Just On Tin campaign with the help of highway schools and Village Mall Superspar in Kloof. Inspired by the success of a campaign called Just One Bag initiated by St John’s College pupil Justin van der Walt, the staff at Kloof Library decided to run a similar drive.
While Just One Bag suggested donations of bags of mielie meal the library decided to collect tins of food. Lucky Star agreed to sponsor the campaign and sent 500 tins of pilchards, banners and recipe books to assist with the promotion.
The aim was for each member of the community to donate just one tin of food, the proceeds of which would go to the poor and hungry in the surrounding communities.
The Rotary Club of Kloof kindly agreed to distribute the tins and it was decided that they would go to 1000 Hills Community Trust, Philangathemba Trust in Lower Molweni and Ubuntu Crisis Centre.
Since so many tins were collected, the following centres will now also receive tins: Zamakuhla Creche (on Wyebank Road), Hillcrest Aids Centre, St Vincent de Paul (Hillcrest) and Makaphutu Children’s Home.
Kloof librarian Jill Storrar said the staff at Kloof Library were delighted with the response and are most grateful to children, students and members of the community for their participation and enthusiasm.
“We hope that Just One Tin will be repeated next year with an even greater response. There are so many needy and hungry people living in the surrounding areas of the Highway region and if everyone gives just a small contribution the result is extraordinary,” said Storrar.
