Westville dancer finds her feet

Novel Solo Dancer won newcomer's award.

WESTVILLE resident, Jackie Despy, recently competed in the 2013 Dance Masters’ Competition held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, United Kingdom and won her division.

The talented dancer won the Newcomer’s Gems Female Division in Solo Dancing after she won all three of the divisions which make up the Solo Dancing section ChaCha, Night Club and Showdance.

Despy beamed as she told the Highway Mail that she had only started training for Solo Dancing a year and a half ago.

“I had previously danced ballet, but stopped when I was 17 years old. I had left school and my life started to get busy, so I did not have the time for ballet anymore,” said Despy.

“Recently, however, I decided that I needed something to distract me. I was working all the time and I just decided that I needed a hobby. I saw Serana Rajkumar, my current trainer, performing at Shall We Dance 2 and I decided that I also wanted to do that,” added Despy.

Despy admitted that it was difficult in the beginning.

“I battled the first few days, and I almost did not come back after my first lesson, but I realised that I had a spring in my step after lessons and just forced myself to keep going” added Despy.
