METRO Police have cracked down on unroadworthy trucks in the area following the horror crash on Field’s Hill.
The head of Metro Police, Commissioner Eugune Nzama ordered trucks found to be unroadworthy by metro officers to be impounded pending the remedying of identified faults.
“This has resulted in 18 trucks being impounded for various defects and suspected irregular authorisation permits. Whereas this approach is likely to create inconvenience in the freight transport industry, Metro Police requests the understanding and cooperation from all stakeholders,” said Nzama
The crackdown comes in the wake of the truck accident which killed 23 people on 5 September. It has since been suggested that the accident may have been caused by a brake system failure. Truck driver Sanele May was subsequently arrested and charged with 22 counts of culpable homicide.
Truck owner Gregory Govender, who launched his own investigation, claimed that the papers May had supplied him with when he applied for the position were fraudulent.
May will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 8 October.
