Love still sparkles at 60
Hillcrest couple celebrated their 60th anniversary, and attributes the success of their relationship to their connection to God.
ROBERT and Wendy Hill, of Hillcrest, celebrated their diamond anniversary on Tuesday 12 November.
The Hills were married at the Methodist Church in Northdene in 1953, after dating for two years. Wendy and Robert met through her brother, Lewis Gower, who was a good friend of Robert’s.
“I use to go to play baseball with Lewis at his home, and would check Wendy out,” said Robert.
A year into their marriage the Hills moved to Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). The Hills made the drastic move after Robert’s foster parents moved to Rhodesia and told the Hills about a potential job for him at the South African Breweries (SAB). Before moving to Northern Rhodesia the Hills had their first child, Gareth.
Robert worked at SAB for five years and later another five years at the Roan Antelope Copper Mines in Luanshya. While living in Ndola the Hills celebrated the births of John and Sharon. In 1966 the Hills moved back to South Africa, after the birth of their youngest daughter, Roslyn.
“Our four children blessed us with 11 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, and there is another great-grandchild on the way. We found life to be happy when we pray, ponder and proceed with the heavenly father as a partner in our marriage,” said Wendy.
According to Robert they are blessed to have most of their family living near them in upper highway, only Roslyn lives far away, in England, but their close family ties have ensured that they have kept in touch.
“Wendy and I have known each other for 63 years, and we can’t imagine being apart. We can’t be closer,” said Robert.
The Hills will have two celebrations to mark the auspicious occasion. On Saturday 23 November they will be celebrating with family and on Saturday 30 October they will be celebrating with their church in Hillcrest.
Robert and Wendy are also eager to reconnect with old friends with whom they have lost contact.
